Description

The statue in this square is of Francisco de Albear. Albear was a Cuban engineer whose most notable achievement was the construction of an aqueduct that provided a much needed water supply to Havana. Construction of the aqueduct began in 1861 and was completed in 1893. Not only was the aqueduct awarded the Gold Medal at the 1878 World’s Fair in Paris but, the aqueduct is still in operation today.
