Description

The former Hotel Detroit, built in 1888, is St Petersburg’s oldest building. The hotel was built by one of the founders of St Petersburg, Peter Demens, who brought the first railroad to the area. The hotel was named after one of the city’s other founders, General John C. Williams’, home town.
The hotel has changed a lot over the years, as shown in the historic photos below. Currently, it is being used as condos as well as for Janus Live. Maybe it is just me, but that seems like an interesting combination of land-uses.

Wonderful job. I heard that Demens and Williams flipped a coin to name the city. Demens won and named it after the Russian city where he grew up.
