1913

Description

A “Vin Fiz Flyer” flying the sky over Tampa. The flyer was originally made by the Wright Brothers but was modified by Calbraith Rodgers, who in 1911 was the first person to fly across the United States. Rodgers was attempting to claim a $50,000 prize offered by William Randolph Hearst to the first person to fly across the country in less than 30 days. Unfortunately, after multiple crashes, Rodgers completed the trip from New York to California in 49 days, 19 days too long.

What an awesome photo. Can you imagine people of Tampa at the time, looking up and going: “Oh my lord, there’s a flying machine!! Come see the flying machine!!” Amazing photo.

Mis-labeled. Not a 1913 photo. Only replicas exits. Rodgers died in a bird caused crash in 1912. Given the buildings in the background, might have been taken over an eastern city. Pasadena & l.A. maybe. Tryng to find info.
